the British Embassy in Riga recommends that you follow carefully the advice below, in order to make your stay as enjoyable and as trouble-free as possible.
* Be streetwise
* Always carry the name, address and telephone number of your accommodation with you.
* Leave your passports and all valuable documents (e.g. driverÂ’s licences, credit cards, travellerÂ’s cheques and flight tickets) in your hotel, preferably in a safe. Do not take them out with you if you do not need them as you may lose them to pickpockets. The consular pages will provide you with information on how you can obtain an emergency passport, should you require one.
* Respect others, do not use abusive language (many people speak or understand English in Latvia) and avoid confrontations.
* Stay in a group if staying out late at night. Do not go to nightclubs on your own.
* If you are travelling in a group, swap mobile phone numbers so you can easily keep in contact if you get separated from your friends
* Most visitors enjoy a trouble-free drink in the city centre pubs, but you should exercise caution over some of the nightclubs on offer. There have been reports of people being planted with illegal substances by door staff and then promptly seized by them. If this happens, do not pay bribe money, but insist on calling the British Embassy, the Police or the Tourist Helpline on the numbers shown below.
* As a safety precaution, do not leave drinks unattended. There have been reported cases of drinks being spiked with illegal substances.
* Be wary of strangers asking you to buy them a drink in some bars or nightclubs, no matter how attractive the offer. You may get a very expensive drinks tab afterwards. If in doubt, establish the price of a drink before you hand over your money and pay for each round as you order it!
* Do not buy, carry or use illegal drugs. The Latvian authorities are serious about combating illegal drugs and the penalties are high. Unlike the United Kingdom, there are no distinctions between the classes of different types of drugs, so the punishment for carrying any type of illegal substance is the same.
* Do not drop litter. Please keep Riga clean and tidy.
* Do not urinate in public - always use a toilet. It is not worth going to jail or paying an expensive fine.
* When using taxis, please note that there is normally a minimum charge of 1.50 Lats and a further charge of 50 santims per kilometre. The distance from RigaÂ’s Old Town to the Airport is approximately 11 kilometres.
* Stay the right side of the law and enjoy your stay.
* If you require consular assistance, or think you have been a victim of crime, you can contact the British Embassy +371 777 4700 during normal working hours, or the British Embassy Duty Officer on +371 2922 1804, at all other times. From within Latvia you can also call the Police on 112 or the newly established Tourist Helpline on 22 033 000 for assistance.
