Radisson Plaza Resort Tahiti

All those travel stresses seemed to just dissipate as we entered the foyer steeped in rich traditonal Tahitian design of the Raddisson Plaza Resort. Check in was welcoming, friendly and fast which is what you want after you have been travelling for 38 hours.

Our room was located on the fourth floor of buillding five directly adjacent to the restaurant , reception building and pool, my initial reaction was "wow!". The room was beautifully decored in rich wood with a writing desk, wardrobe, sofa, arm chairs, coffee table, television, a small bathroom and the most enormous balcony that overlooked the pounding waves of the ocean. Thirty seconds later remembering my jetlag my second reaction was "where the hell is the bed". After a frantic minute we located a staircase which at the top we were welcomed by a king size bed, large bathroom including a bath another television and a second balcony.... at this point in time Im thinking "can life get any better?", actually yes it could, I really needed to sleep.

The raddisson is a lovely hotel located right on Lafayette Beach, which is a public beach but we only noticed a couple of other people there the whole of our stay. The beach is a black sand beach which was one the factors that drew us to this hotel. Its strange to say but there are not that many beaches on Tahiti, and definetly not the kind you see in post cards (white sand and palm trees). The sea can be quite rough and warnings are given to people to be carefull about the currents as the beach is not supervised. The sound of the waves can be heard through the large glass balcony doors making an excellent sleep tool, beats counting sheep.

The pool looks directly onto the beach and is a good size with depths ranging from a half a meter, perfect for just lying and tanning, to 2.5 meters and includes a jacuzzi. We came in the rainy season so there were not too many people at the hotel and we often had the pool to ourselsves, which is amazing to be in at sunset, floating in the water with the sea crashing in front of you and sun setting behind Moorea.

There were two things that struck me about this hotel other than the obvious view and duplex room. After reading several reviews about staff attidude and how expensive everything is in Tahiti, the Raddison was a pleasant surpise. The staff were incredably friendly and helpful even allowing us to occasionally break hotel rules, like sitting in the outside bar area and ordering off the restaurant menu, nothing major, but really nice of them.

TheHotel has two restaurants and bar. Some bookings we found out, came with either breakfast, half board or full board, check with your booking if this is included. We decided to opt for the al la carte menu for lunch and dinner and had the breakfast buffet. In my opinion the buffets were overprised with Breakfast at 2950 XFT and Dinner at 3950 XFT, there was not a huge selection on either to warrant the price in my opinion. On the otherhand the al carte menu was quite resonanable considering, of course, where you were.

Breakfast included omelete with bacon and toast 1400 XTF, scrambled or fried eggs 1300 or selection of 4 patries 800 XTF Coffee ranges from 130 to 390 XTF depending on what type, surprisingly, one of the most expensive items was fresh squeezed juice coming in at 1300 XTF.

The lunch menu included, a Cheeseburger, Caeser Salad with chicken or traditional tuna cervice for around 1900 XFT, soft drinks around 350 XFT, local beer 490 XFT and a large bottle of water 700 XFT.

The dinner menu included fresh seared tuna steak with pesto and polenta 2000 XFT, mahi mahi with mushrooms, bacon and chinese vegatables 2000 XFT. Meat dishes including beef and veal range from 2000 to 2500 XFT, glass of wine 800-1200 XFT. Cocktails and mixed drinks range from 1100 - 1300 XFT in the bar and there is also a bar snacks menu with a selection of cheese plates, dips or chicken wings ranging from 600-1100 XFT. Drinks were accompanied by complimentary peanuts and olives.

I really recommend this hotel, for friendly, helpful staff, great views, good beach and value for money..... as far as "value for money" can go in Tahiti.
